Scented Garden is a practical guide to growing a garden for its fragrance. We write for anyone with a balcony, a patio, a few pots or a small garden who wants it to smell wonderful without taking on a second job.
What we help you decide
Choosing is the hard part. For every plant we recommend, we answer five questions:
- Can I grow it?
- Where does it go?
- What grows well beside it?
- How much work is it?
- When will it smell?
The answers come with numbers you can use: pot diameter in centimetres, hours of sun, the months a plant is in scent and the time of day it is strongest.
Where we garden
Our garden is in southern Hungary: cold winters, hot dry summers, a Central European climate. That is the garden our examples and timings come from. Your frost dates will differ, so each guide gives our month as the example and tells you how to shift it.
What you won’t find here
- Essential-oil recipes. We write about living plants and what to do with them in the garden and the house.
- Medicinal claims. We grow plants for their scent, for the kitchen and for the pleasure of it. We never say a plant treats or cures anything.
- Gardens that need a gardener. Everything here is sized for a balcony, a patio or a small plot, and for a busy week.
How we work
We publish under one name, Scented Garden, rather than personal bylines. Plant facts are checked against named horticultural sources and linked, so you can read them yourself. Where a plant is harmful to pets or children, we say so and name the source. Where we are unsure, we say that once, plainly.
